The present specification provides a self-illuminating cannula device for facilitating visualization of the cannula device during surgery. The self-illuminating mechanism may be provided within the cannula device, for example, by a phosphor incorporated within the hub or sealing element of the cannula device. The cannula device may emit light of a particular color selected to correspond to the size of the cannula device.
