To enable a driver to properly confirm relative positional relationship between a vehicle and surroundings.SOLUTION: An overhead image generation device comprises: an image data acquisition unit 42; an overhead image generation unit 44 generating an overhead image; a reference object detection unit 45 detecting a reference object on a periphery of a vehicle; a direction specification unit 46 specifying a relative direction between the reference object detected by the reference object detection unit 45 and the vehicle; a superimposition processing unit 48 generating an overlapping image superimposing information indicating the relative direction between the reference object and the vehicle represented as a relative direction based on an own vehicle icon over the overhead image; and a display control unit 49 displaying the overlapping image on a display panel 31. The overhead image generation unit 44 generates, when a relative positional relationship between the reference object and the vehicle satisfies a prescribed condition, a second overhead image instead of the overhead image based on the own vehicle icon.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
