PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of further improving cell efficiency of a molten salt electrolytic cell that employs multipoles, by preventing a through ionic current passing through open holes present in the multipoles made of graphite from flowing through an anode to a cathode without contributing to the electrolysis at the multipole part.SOLUTION: There is provided a method of producing metallic magnesium by electrolyzing molten magnesium chloride using a molten salt electrolytic cell that is constituted of an electrolytic chamber and a metal recovery chamber and comprises at least one multipole constituted of graphite having a pore volume of 0.12 mL/g or less in its electrolytic cell unit present in the electrolytic chamber, and a method of producing titanium sponge using the metallic magnesium.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
