method for analyzing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (hit) in a patient's serum or plasma sample, the method comprising: incubating a mixture of platelets with a patient's serum or plasma sample in the presence of a low concentration of heparin or a high concentration of heparin; incubating a mixture of platelets in the presence or absence of a platelet activator; quantify platelets and activated platelets in the mixtures; calculate the percentage of activated platelets within the platelets for each of the mixtures; calculate a platelet activation index with heparin (hepla) using the calculated percentages; measure and calculate hepl index of serum or plasma samples from donors who are not hit; calculate cut-off values for the hepa index of serum or plasma samples from donors who are not hit, and determine whether a patient is hit or not by comparing a patient's hepla index with the cut-off values.
