a networked system, such as a transportation management system, selects a starting point location for a trip and navigates a passenger to the selected starting point location using augmented reality (ra). in response to receiving a travel request including a home location, a starting point location selection module selects candidate starting point locations within a limited distance from the passenger's client device. the starting point location selection module filters and classifies candidates based on historical service data and location characteristics associated with the home location as well as any passenger history of departure points at the home location and data from the travel request. the highest ranked candidate is selected as the starting point location and sent to the passenger and driver client devices. a ra navigation module instructs the passenger's client device to visually augment a live video stream with the computer generated ra elements to navigate the passenger from a current location to the starting point location.
