The present invention provides antibodies that specifically bind to a type 1 plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1). The present invention also provides pharmaceutical compositions, as well as nucleic acids encoding antibodies to PAI-1, recombinant expression vectors and host cells for producing such antibodies or fragments thereof. Also provided are methods for using antibodies to modulate PAI-1 activity or detect PAI-1 in vitro or in vivo. The present invention further provides methods for producing antibodies that specifically bind to PAI-1 in an active conformational state.
