The present invention relates to the production of podophyllotoxin (PTOX) in transformed roots of Hyptis Suaveolens. PTOX is a plant-based 2, 7’-cyclolignan used to semi-synthesize drugs used in the chemotherapy of different types of cancer. The said method establishes for the induction of transformed roots of Hyptis Suaveolens, selecting a transformed root line reported (RT-HsTD10). The culture conditions establish (75% MS medium, w/v, added with thiamine [2mg/L], agitation [110 rpm], and temperature [24±2°C]. The extraction method establishes (grinding finely 100 mg [PS] of roots and place them in 2m of methanol, sonicate for one hour at 40±5°C, add 4m of water and 4m of dichloromethane, vortex three minutes, centrifuge at 5000rpm, recover the organic phase and dry). The present invention aims to obtain a yield of 5.6 mg/g (PS) of PTOX in the RT-HsTD10 line. Said concentration is 100 times higher than that reported in wild plant roots (0.05 mg/g PS) and 56 times higher than that re ported in non-transformed roots grown in vitro (0.1 m/gg PS).
