The present invention relates to a floating vertical axis wind turbine (1), VAWT, with a central column (3) which is connected to support structure (10, 11; 15). The VAWT (1) comprises at least one rigid peripheral power generating unit (5b) comprising a blade (5a), a peripheral buoyancy element (13) and a water turbine assembly (8). The peripheral buoyancy element (13) extends from the lower end of the blade (5 a) and connects the water turbine assembly (8) to the blade (5a), and wherein the peripheral buoyancy element (13) at least partly supports the rigid peripheral power generating unit (5b) by buoyancy. A bearing assembly (7) is rotatably attached to the central column (3) and at least one first strut (4a) connects the rigid peripheral power generating unit (5b) with the bearing assembly (7).
