The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles from spent coffee waste, in the absence of propionic acid, comprising the following steps: a) mechanochemical grinding of coffee waste together with a iron precursor (ratio 4-2), b) drying of the materials obtained in stage a), c) calcination of the dried materials of stage b). The present invention also relates to the magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles obtained by the process of the present invention, and the use thereof in oxidation reactions.
