Disclosed are a method and apparatus for evaluating the reliability of a wide area protection system, which solve the technical problem that current research results of the reliability of a wide area protection system are only confined to the research of the reliability of a communication network for the wide area protection system, and there is still no reliability analysis model regarding the whole system. The method provided in the present invention comprises: S1, acquiring an information acceptance rate d of a wide area monitoring center in the wide area protection system; S2, according to the information acceptance rate d, obtaining the correct rate p_sf(d) of the start of wide area protection, the correct rate p_fz(d) of fault area positioning and the correct rate p_fc(d) of fault component identification; and S3, multiplying the correct rate p_sf(d) of the start of wide area protection, the correct rate p_fz(d) of fault area positioning and the correct rate p_fc(d) of fault component identification to obtain the correct rate P_dmpof a decision of the wide area protection system.
