The present invention relates to a method for the electrochemical conversion of a gas comprising CO₂ and an apparatus for the electrochemical conversion of a gas comprising CO₂, wherein a gas comprising CO₂ is converted at a cathode of an electrolysis cell, which comprises a metal selected from the group comprising Ag, Au, Zn, Pd, Cu and/or alloys and or mixtures thereof, preferably to form a product gas comprising CO, and wherein a gas comprising H₂ is converted at an anode of the electrolysis cell to form a product comprising protons.
