Provided is a mesh simplification device comprising: a flip determination unit 2 for determining whether a triangular element of a mesh will undergo a flip when a side or so-called edge of the triangular element is contracted; an avoidance manipulation unit 3 which carries out a manipulation for avoiding the occurrence of flipping if it is determined that there will be such an occurrence; and an edge contraction unit 4 which implements the edge contraction as if it is determined that there will be no occurrence of flipping and implements the edge contraction after the manipulation for avoiding the occurrence of flipping if it is determined that there will be an occurrence thereof. The introduction of the avoidance manipulation unit 3 allows the number of elements of a mesh to be reduced to the extent possible, that is, allows the mesh to be simplified, even for cases where edge contraction could not be performed with conventional techniques because flipping would occur.
