A π-conjugated compound according to the present invention has a structure represented by general formula (1), while having a HOMO level of -5.3 eV or more. (In the formula, M represents CX1 or a nitrogen atom; each of X1-X6 represents an aromatic substituent or an aromatic heterocyclic group; and at least four of the X1-X6 moieties are electron-donating fused aromatic ring substituents having 14 or more π-electrons, while at least one of the X1-X6 moieties is an electron-donating substituent.
