A charge composition for use in the manufacture of ferrosilicon contains quartzite, a carbonaceous reducing agent and an iron-containing material in the form of pellets of pyrite cinder, in the following proportions: 34-50 wt% quartzite, 30-34 wt% carbonaceous reducing agent, and the remainder being pyrite cinder pellets. Shavings of carbon steels are not used in the charge. The carbonaceous reducing agent contains 40-67 wt% nut coal and 33-60 wt% wood waste, wherein said wood waste is in the form of pellets or chips. The pyrite cinder pellets contain pyrite cinder and liquid glass as a binder, in the following proportions: 85-93 wt% pyrite cinder, and 7-15 wt% liquid glass on dry basis. The result is that of broadening the range of charge compositions available, using cheap and abundant raw material, and improving the operating characteristics of a furnace device by using in the ferrosilicon manufacturing process a charge composition that has low electrical conductivity, which leads to an increase in silica recovery, with an increase in the filter layer of the charge, and to a decrease in the formation of waste slag and, consequently, to the possibility of operating the furnace transformer at a higher voltage level, thus increasing the electrical efficiency of the furnace device.
