The present invention provides a method of treating one or more preterm birth complications a premature infant suffers from, including administering umbilical cord blood stem cells and optionally placental stem cells to the premature infant. The present invention also provides a method for combining and administering umbilical cord blood stem cells, particularly autologous umbilical cord blood cells and placental stem cells, for treatment of premature infants, and compositions comprising the same.
