An object of the present invention is to provide a method and an apparatus for automatically controlling lighting of a machine vision system which can further improve reliability and consumer satisfaction for a product. Provided is a method for automatically controlling lighting of a machine vision system. The method may include the following steps of: extracting a reference luminance value; obtaining an illumination luminance value; comparing the obtained illumination luminance value with the extracted reference luminance value; calculating a gain of the lighting from a result of the comparison; and correcting the lighting based on the calculated gain of the lighting.
