A robotic surgical system is disclosed having a ring network for transferring information between a controller and a node of one or more robotic arms. A communication protocol in which synchronous and asynchronous information can be communicated with a node of the robot arm is described. Various aspects of the physical layer that can be used with the network are also disclosed.
