An activity-based probe that can be used to selectively identify and characterize enzymes involved in the different phases of xenobiotic metabolism in the host and its microbiota population(s) To describe. The activity-based probes described are specifically labeled only for their target active enzymes involved in xenobiotic metabolism and therefore provide a measure of true protein function activity rather than measuring transcript or protein presence. Active-based probes also provide profiling of various modes of these enzymes. Methods of making active-based probes and exemplary methods for their use are disclosed.
