A method for generating compensation data for compensating luminance characteristics of a display panel is disclosed. The method includes receiving an image of a test image output from a display panel, measuring luminance of a plurality of areas on the display panel using the received image, and compensating resolution for the plurality of areas. Determining and generating the compensation data according to the determined compensation resolution, wherein a first area of the plurality of areas is compensated with a first compensation resolution according to the compensation data, and a first of the plurality of areas is compensated. The second region is compensated for at a second resolution higher than the first compensation resolution according to the compensation data.
