The present invention relates generally to novel Bacillus species mutants capable of producing increased amounts of an industrially relevant protein of interest. Certain embodiments of the invention relate to a modified Bacillus species cell comprising an introduced polynucleotide encoding a variant GlcT protein. Other embodiments relate to methods and compositions for producing endogenous and/or heterologous proteins of interest in modified Bacillus species (daughter) cells, while certain other embodiments encode variant GlcT proteins of the invention, It relates to nucleic acid sequences, in particular polynucleotide open reading frame (ORF) sequences, vectors thereof and DNA expression constructs thereof.
