The present invention relates to an approach to discovering novel pesticidal proteins from highly heterogeneous environmental sources. This methodology utilizes a metagenome enrichment procedure that increases the expression of specific bacterial genera prior to in-depth sequencing to access new strains of pesticidal proteins. In an aspect, the methods taught are useful for creating large genomic libraries enriched in Bacillus. The enriched genomic library is useful for the discovery of novel cry toxin genes that allow the identification of novel cry proteins.
