The present invention provides an aqueous-based coating system that can be used to form durable, abrasion-resistant, and tough protective coatings on a wide range of substrates. The coating system advantageously has excellent adhesion properties and can be coated directly onto the stainless steel surface without the need for an intervening primer layer. However, a primer layer or other type of coating can be used in combination with the coating system of the present invention if desired. The coating system is particularly effective at protecting metal-containing substrates such as composite refrigerated cargo containers. The resulting coating is flexible and impact resistant. The coating composition is an aqueous composition, so it has a lower VOC emission and less residual odor than the solvent-based composition.
