The method of the present invention includes unwinding a web material from a support, and providing an elastomeric stamp, the stamp comprising a base surface and an arrangement of pattern elements extending away from the base surface. Wherein each patterned element has a stamping surface with a lateral dimension of less than about 5 microns and a height relative to the base surface, wherein the aspect ratio of the height to the lateral dimension is greater than or equal to 1.5. The stamping surface of the pattern element is inked with an ink composition comprising functionalizing molecules, wherein the functionalizing molecules comprise functional groups selected to bind to the base material. The stamping surface of the pattern element is brought into contact with the main surface of the web material for a printing time sufficient to bond the functional group with the web material, and thus on the main surface of the web material according to the arrangement of the pattern elements on the stamping surface. To form a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of functionalized material.
