The three-dimensional (3-D) printer includes a build material development station and a support material development station positioned to transfer layers of build material and support material to an intermediate transfer surface. A platen with a flat surface is positioned to contact the intermediate transfer surface. The intermediate transfer surface transfers the layer of build material and support material to the flat surface of the platen whenever the platen contacts one of the layers on the intermediate transfer surface. The dispenser is positioned to deposit the leveling material on the layer on the platen, and the mechanical planner is positioned to level in contact with the leveling material on the layer on the platen so that the top of the leveling material is parallel to the flat surface of the platen.
