Energy-saving sensors for hazardous gases are provided using a thermocouple design. For one aspect, a fire-hazard gas sensor shall include at least one first electrode; at least one second electrode consisting of a material different from that of the first electrode; and a catalytic material at an active reaction point between the first electrode and the second electrode;where the active reaction point between the first electrode and the second electrode forms a thermocouple. A detection unit includes, for example, several sensors and a procedure for detecting fire-retardant gas using these sensors is also provided.
