A flat metal rolling stock (1) is conveyed on a conveyor line in a transport direction (x). A device for cooling the flat rolling stock (1) with a liquid coolant (5) has at least one cooling bar (3) arranged above the conveying path, to which the liquid coolant (5) is supplied via a supply line (4). The cooling beam (3) extends essentially transversely to the transport direction (x) and has a plurality of outlet tubes (6), each of which has an inlet opening (7) and an outlet opening (8). The liquid coolant (5) enters the respective outlet tube (6) from the cooling beam (3) via the respective inlet opening (7) and exits the respective outlet tube (6) via the respective outlet opening (8). The respective outlet tube (6), viewed in the direction of flow of the liquid coolant (5), has an upward beginning section (9) starting from the inlet opening (7), an adjoining middle section (10) and an adjoining downward section and extending to the outlet opening (8) end section (11). The middle section (10) thus contains an apex (12) at which the coolant (5) flowing through the respective outlet tube (6) reaches a highest point. The outlet openings (8) are located above the chilled beam (3). A height distance (h1) of the inlet opening (7) from the vertex (12) is at least twice, in particular at least three times as large as a height distance (h2) of the outlet opening (8) from the vertex (12).
