An automotive vehicle includes an internal combustion engine that combusts an air / fuel mixture to produce exhaust gas that contains particulate material and an exhaust gas aftertreatment component that collects the particulate material. A regeneration system burns off the collected particulate material, which regenerates the exhaust aftertreatment component. A controller obtains a model of combustion based on a kinetically controlled combustion phase and a mixture controlled combustion phase and determines a point on the model related to current engine conditions that indicates an amount of particulate matter in the exhaust gas.
