A method using the compensation learning strategy for diagnosing an internal combustion engine component includes operating the component via an actuator command to set a first operating parameter that is representative of a first operating mode of component operation. The method additionally includes determining the compensation of the actuator command in order to counteract the first parameter trend during the first operating mode. The method also includes determining the compensation of the first parameter using the determined actuator command compensation. The method also includes operating the component using the actuator command to set a second operating parameter representative of a second mode of operation of the component. The method further includes identifying a tendency in the second parameter that relates negatively to the second operating mode.
