The disclosure provides camera cleanliness detection and an alarm for a vehicle. A method of operating a vehicle may include detecting that a vehicle user is leaving the vehicle, that a user is approaching the vehicle, or that the user is remotely starting the vehicle. When one of these events occurs, a cleanliness test of the camera lens is automatically carried out. If the test detects an improper camera lens, notify the user while outside the vehicle that the camera lens needs cleaning.
