This device (50) is portable so as to be able to be carried on board a maintenance vehicle (22) by an operator when the latter gets on board the maintenance vehicle. It comprises a radiocommunication module for establishing a link with a base station selected from a plurality of base stations of a communication infrastructure (30) of a supervision system (100) according to the position of the vehicle now , the radiocommunication module collecting an identifier of the base station with which it has established a link; and a database comprising a description of the rail network, associating position information with each identifier of the base stations of the communication infrastructure. The device then determines an instantaneous position of the maintenance vehicle from the position information associated with the identifier collected by the radiocommunication module at the current instant.
