Methods (100, 200) for increasing the shelf life of a microalgae biomass are provided. These methods may include the following steps. Extract a micro-algae biomass using a first filter; here, the water content of the microalgae biomass is greater than 80%. Next, part of the microalgae biomass is rinsed in a solution to substantially remove at least one undesirable substance from the microalgae biomass. Then, by filtering the micro-algae biomass a second time using a second filter to remove the excess fluid, the second filtering here decreases the water content of the micro-algae biomass. Then, by drying the micro-algae biomass using a water elimination device, the water content threshold of the microalgae biomass is reduced to a first threshold. Certain embodiments can also understand determining whether the microalgae comes from salt or fresh water and, therefore, selecting an appropriate rinse solution. Other embodiments may include additional drying steps.
