The invention relates to a method for controlling a device (8) for electrically heating a catalyst (7) for the selective reduction of nitrogen oxides in an exhaust line (4) of an internal combustion engine (2). , the catalyst (7) operating using an injection of reducing agent contained in a tank (11) having means for heating the reducing agent, characterized in that it comprises: a step in which it is determined whether, when the engine is started, the reducing agent is frozen in its reservoir (11), and if so - a step in which the heating power required to thaw the reducing agent is determined within a predetermined time, -a step in which the reducing agent is heated to the required power, -a step in which the device (8) for heating the catalyst is activated before the end of the predetermined duration of heating of the reducing agent within a shorter period at the predetermined heating time.
