A method assists a driver of a vehicle comprising at least one display screen and a steering wheel which can be placed in a retracted position in an automated driving phase and secured to a steering column of the so-called cable type and associated with a steering electric power assisted steering angle of steering wheels. This method comprises a step (10-40) in which, when the steering wheel is placed in its retracted position, the current orientation angle of the steered wheels is determined, then a set of data is defined defining an image representative of the steering wheel disoriented with respect to a reference position by an angle equal to the angle of orientation being determined, then this image represented by this set of data is displayed on the display screen.
