A battery powered mobile device has a battery monitoring circuit that measures one or more parameters indicative of a current state of the battery. A battery power factor is calculated as a function of the one or more parameters, and the battery power factor is compared to a threshold. When the battery power factor exceeds the threshold, a system or process within the mobile device is identified whose power consumption can be reduced. The power consumption is reduced by altering or disabling the identified system or process. The systems or processes may be identified on the basis of an assigned priority. The parameters measured may be the battery temperature, battery terminal voltage and battery current draw. The battery power factor may be calculated as the sum of assigned values given to each of the battery temperature (T), terminal voltage (V) and current draw (I). The identified system or process may comprise a heater element, and the power consumption may be reduced by either deactivating the heater element or causing the heater element to operate at less than 100% heat generation.
