The invention relates to a building cylinder (1) for a machine (90) for the layer-by-layer production of three-dimensional objects (60) by sintering or melting powdered material (61) by means of a high-energy beam (100), in particular laser beam, with a main body (2) substantially in the form of a cylindrical casing and with a piston part (3) movable on the inner side (22) of the main body (2) along a cylinder axis (4). The piston part (3) has, on its upper side, a base element (5), in particular a substrate (5) or a preform, for the growth of a three-dimensional object (60), and on the piston part (3) there is formed a powder seal (9) bearing against the inner side (22) of the main body (2) for sealing the powdered material (61). The building cylinder according to the invention is characterised in that the piston part (3) has a seal carrier (8), on which the powder seal (9) is mounted, in that a ceramic insulation means (7), in particular a circumferential insulation ring, is mounted on the seal carrier (9), and in that the base element (5) is mounted on the insulation means (7), the base element (5) being at a distance from the seal carrier (8) and from the powder seal (9). According to the invention, a 3D printing machine is provided with which improved transportability and at the same time a high manufacturing accuracy of a three-dimensional object can be achieved.
