Won-Hyo’s Hwa-jaeng Theory in Modern Korea

Hwa-jaeng (和諍)(harmonization) is one of the keyword in Won-Hyo (617-686) philosophy. Won-hyo generally known as Hwajaengguksa (和諍國師), mean National teacher for National unity and harmony, that is the penname given by King Sukjong (肅宗) in Goryeo Dynasty. But the meaning of Hwajaeng has been interpreted differently depending on the each era in Korea. In other word, it is reinterpreted depending on the political situation in Modern Korea. For example, Hwajaeng is reinterpreted as meanings of Chonghab(総合, integration) and Tongili(統一, unification), in the heat of revival of Koreanology and the reunification of North and South during the late of the twentieth century. This is the result of Korean nationalism. Another thing that can be pointed out that Won-Hyo’s hwa-jaeng theory, at that time, became forces lead to understand as ideological motto or slogan for the integration of religion in the korea ethnic situation, inironically. Anyway, now we need to be re-examine Wonhyo’s hwajaeng, especially modern times in Korea Buddhism, for a new perspective of research.
