Du Fu in German —Focusing on the Connection with Hori Tatsuo’s Japanese Translations of Du Fu’s Poems

Hori Tatsuo (1904–53) left four handwritten notes concerning classical Chinese poetry. This paper focuses on one of these, Hori’s notes for translations of the Tang-dynasty poet Du Fu’s poems, demonstrating that Hori’s manuscript is in fact based on a Hans Bethge’s 1922 German translation of classical Chinese poetry, Pfirsichblüten aus China; it also points out editorial issues in the deciphering and transcription of Hori’s notes for publication in Hori Tatsuo zenshu, the 1980 Chikuma Shobo edition of Hori’s collected works.
