This report is concerned with the analysis of the behavior of archstructures under dynamic loads. A numerical procedure is described for thecomputation of the dynamic response of circular arches subjected to transientforces for both the elastic range of behavior and for the range approachingfailure. The problem is analyzed approximately by replacing the continuous archby a framework consisting of a series of rigid bars and flexible joints. The scope of this investigation is described briefly in Chapter 1. Thecharacteristics of the substitute framework are described in Chapter 2. InChapter 3 the equations necessary for dynamic response calculations are derived, and an outline is given of the procedure for their solution. In Chapter 4 arepresented the results of some studies on the computation of natural frequenciesand buckling loads of uniform circular arches. The pertinent equations areformulated, and a number of numerical solutions are obtained for arches withfixed dimensions, by considering different numbers of bars in the analogousframework. These solutions are determined for the purpose of estimating theaccuracy of the substitute framework. Included in Chapter 5 for convenienceof reference, is a summary of existing formulas for the approximate calculationof natural frequencies and buckling loads of uniform, circular arches withhinged or fixed ends.
