Albers Liquid Desiccant Cooling Unit Performance Testing. Final Report, September1990-December 1991

Liquid desiccant air conditioning technology is being developed by the AlbersCorporation for residential and light commercial use. This program measured the capacity and efficiency of a laboratory prototype Albers Air Conditioner supplied to the American Gas Association Laboratories, which was designed to produce from 0.9-1.0 tons of net cooling. It delivers 100% outside air to the conditioned space through direct contact with the desiccant solution, and uses 100% exhaust air in its operation. This project involved the design, construction and commissioning of a 1-5 ton capacity test facility, and the actual testing of the air conditioning unit. The unit was set up in an 'outside environment' room, with the capacity measured using the loop air enthalpy method. The outside air was controlled to a variety of conditions: ARI A, ARI B, Tokyo, and ramped slowly in between. The focus was on establishing trends while collecting steady state ratings. Specific goals for the system were to produce 0.9-1 ton of cooling at an expected COP of 0.6-0.8. The results indicate that the Albers system met the goals set for the laboratory prototype.
