Systematic Review of the Peer-Reviewed Scientific Literature on the Effects ofPornographic Materials on Behaviors, Attitudes and Knowledge

The study involves a systematic review of the scientific research investigatingpornography. Included are studies on the sale and distribution of pornographic materials over time; the use of sexually explicit materials in medical treatments, sex education, and marital relationships; and the effects of exposure to sexually explicit materials on attitudes and behavior. The systematic review technique allows a formative evaluation of a body of research that defines the state-of-the-art in terms of methodology and the state-of-knowledge based on results. Systematic reviews are characterized by careful sampling of articles and high reliability of review criteria. In this study, 192 peer-reviewed quantitative research studies were identified.
