Economic development creates the foundations for better, healthier lives. But when it is badly planned or too rapid, it can damage a nation's cultural fabric. The essay tells how archaeologists, architects, politicians, historians, nongovernmental organizations, government officials, and international bodies are struggling to save cultural heritage. It focuses on the work to preserve Roman mosaics in Paphos on the island of Cyprus and to restore the Old Walled City of Lahore in Pakistan.
