The Gerontology Program at San Jose State University developed two new coursesexamining issues of eldercare in a culturally diverse society. In addition, it expanded content on eldercare and diversity within existing courses and offered faculty development opportunities. Both new courses were designed to serve both liberal arts (general education) and pre-professional students. The courses were designed to (1) increase awareness of the growing need for eldercare; (2) understand the personal and professional roles that they may play that relate to eldercare; and (3) develop a commitment to changes that address the challenge of our society's aging population. They presented knowledge about the diverse needs of elders with disabilities, formal and informal services, and policy issues.
