Wheat Grain Cooperatives Adjust to Challenges of 1980s, Poised for 1990s

This report presents information for 1983 through 1991 on the physical andfinancial structure adjustments made by local first-handlers-of-grain cooperatives in three major wheat areas-Northern Plains, Southern Plains, and Pacific Northwest. They had annual total sales of at least $5 million, more than half in grain. Most associations also handled farm supplies and all provided related services. Information for this report is based on condensed balance sheets and operating statements. Financial report adjustments were made to ensure data comparability because of variations in accounting, auditing practices, and terminology. Some detail was lost in the process. Data reported are averages per, not totals for, first-handler grain associations.
