PennDOT/MAUTC Partnership Project Task 18: Risk Management Approach to DistrictInformation Management

The purpose of the study is to examine the documentation and record-keepingpractices of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 10-0 Office from a risk management perspective. Documents and records prepared and maintained by transportation agencies often can be critical elements in tort litigation defense. Although an agency may have acted prudently in performance of its duties, it must nonetheless prove reasonable conduct to the satisfaction of a jury. Accurately and systematically prepared documents and records can go a long way in establishing necessary proof. Likewise, documentation has a proactive risk management role to perform as a method of communicating need for corrective actions that may prevent future highway incidents.
