A suitable methodology for classification testing of cables should include astandarized full-scale test scenario as a reference combined with a small scale test method. To make such a system successful a representative full-scale method has to be found. Such a method must reflect the most important fire hazards. In NORDTEST project 1084-93' the UL1666 test has been selected as the full scale test which reflects the vertical upward flame spread. In this NORDTEST project vertical flame spread on cables was selected as being worst case scenario for flame spread. It is assumed that materials performing good in this scenario are likely to perform also good in a horizontal flame spread scenario. No supplementary testing was conducted to verify this assumption. As intermediate scale test the IEC 3323.3 test was modified in order to reflect better the performance in the UL 1666 tests.
