Collapse Studies of Mission-Gothic Undercrossing and Bull Creek Canyon ChannelBridge during the January 17, 1994 Northridge Earthquake

Mission-Gothic Undercrossing and Bull Creek Canyon Channel bridge are locatedclose to each other on State Route 118 San Fernando Freeway, Los Angeles, California. The former collapsed and the latter was severely damaged during the January 17, 1994 North ridge earthquake. To study their performance, three-dimensional structural systems are established with consideration of superstructures, columns, and abutment conditions. Vertical and horizontal ground motion, recorded at Sylmar County Hospital parking lot about 18 km from the epicenter, are modified to consider the effects of distance between recording station and bridges. These modified data are used as seismic input for nonlinear time-history analysis.
