Calculation of Iron Losses in Electrical Machines

This report gives a review of the recently published literature (1990-1996)concerning the iron loss calculation methods associated with the computation of the magnetic field in electrical machines. With this respect, two paths can be followed. The first path is connected with seeking the computational simplicity, which leads to the simplified model of the core. Using this model, the iron core is usually characterized by zero conductivity and non-hysteretic properties, what in turn means, that the iron loss is omitted from the field calculation. After the magnetic field has been computed by means of the simplified model, the evaluation of the iron loss is performed, based on empirical or semi-empirical formulae. These formulae for the iron loss calculation are summarized in the report, regarding the alternating and rotating flux conditions. After the summary, the papers associated with the first path of the iron loss calculation are discussed in some detail. In the frame of the second path, the possibilities of the iron loss inclusion into the magnetic field calculation are presented. The
