摘要

Lead has adverse health effects on the central and peripheral nervous,211u001ehematologic, cardiovascular, renal, and reproductive systems.(1) Since 1981, 26 211u001estates have established lead registries for surveillance of adult lead 211u001eabsorption, The adverse health effects of lead are monitored by the New Jersey 211u001eDepartment of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS) by reporting of individuals 211u001ewith BLL >25 mg/dl. The NJDHSS established an occupational lead surveillance 211u001esystem, now named Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and Surveillance (ABLES) based on 211u001etwo regulations. The first regulation, in effect since October 1985, requires 211u001eclinical laboratories to report BLL >25 mg/dl to the NJDHSS. The second 211u001eregulation, in effect since May 1990, requires physicians to report lead 211u001etoxicity. The sources of lead exposure for reported individuals are identified 211u001ethrough these reports. This report describes trends in ABLES data for the period 211u001e1986 through 1996. It also provides information from interviews of workers with 211u001eBLL 40 mg/dl and greater, and describes some of the NJDHSS interventions with 211u001eemployers. Previous NJDHSS reports on ABLES include a 1993 report for data and 211u001eprograms from 1985 through 1991 and a 1995 report for data and programs through 211u001e1993.
