Strategies for Integrating Substance Abuse Treatment and the Juvenile Justice211 System: A Practice Guide

The purpose of the report is to promote the most desirable practices in the field211u001eof substance abuse treatment for juvenile offenders. Drawing on practice 211u001eexperience, expert opinion, and available research, the Practice Guide provides 211u001ean overview of the types of services available in the juvenile justice and 211u001ealcohol and drug treatment systems, highlighting selected innovative approaches. 211u001eBecause there is great ferment in the juvenile justice field in the late 1990s, 211u001ethis document is fairly comprehensive in nature. The Center for Substance Abuse 211u001eTreatment convened a panel of grantees and other experts to discuss the 211u001edevelopment of a practice guide that would compile knowledge and experience about 211u001ethe provision of services to substance-abusing juvenile offenders. During a two-211u001eday session they defined the purposes of the Practice Guide, developed an 211u001eoutline, identified content to be included, and identified innovative approaches 211u001eto providing substance abuse treatment services, along with health and social 211u001eservices, for juveniles offenders.
