Stringent Comparison of Sampling and Analysis Methods for VOCs in Ambient Air

A carefully designed study was conducted during the summer of 1998 to211u001esimultaneously collect samples of abmient air using two canisters from two 211u001ecommercial vendors and compare the analysis results to direct sorbent 211u001epreconcentration results taken at the time of sample collection. A total of 32 1-211u001eh sample sets were taken, each composed of a 'real-time' sample analyzed by an 211u001eautoGC/MS and two types of canisters, SUMMA and Silco. Hourly total non-methane 211u001eorganic carbon (TNMOC) ozone, and meteorological measurements were also made. 211u001eEach of the canisters was analyzed on the autoGC/MS system for a target list of 211u001e108 VOCs and on a manual cryosampling GC/FID system. Comparisons are made between 211u001ethe collection and analysis methods. Because of the low sample loading (150-250 211u001eppbC TNMOC), these comparisons are a stringest test of sample collection and 211u001eanalysis capabilities.
